I don't know if you are still looking for a mascot. Our homeschool name is Elisha Christian School. We chose this because like Elijah we want to pass on the mantle of our faith to our children. We want our children to be Elisha's. I've never thought of using a mascot though...hmmm...have to get back to you on that.

Since I love both lions and lambs and their symbolism in the Word, I'd go with one (or both) of those. The other thought would be something including the initials of your children's names. Good luck!

There is a good article on the blog Happy to be @Home entitled "Naming Your Homeschool" and posted on Aug. 20. I'm not very tech-savvy, so here's my attempt to post the direct link: http://happytobeathome.net/naming-your-homeschool/.

Aside from giving you direction on how to go about choosing a name, it has suggestions for school flag, mascot, logo.

We used Peterson Academy for forever while waiting for inspiration. Then one night we got silly and came up with "Cumberland Home Institute of Philoteknos" (Love of Children). Our mascot: the fish, our team: The Fishin' Chips. Our verse, "I will make you Fisher's of Men" ;) My husband came up with this cool logo which is a stick sort of figure of a father holding a child on his lap fishing. It's pretty cool looking.

We've never done anything like get T-Shirts done or anything, but it's tempting when we are out at museums and things. ;)

OK, I realize these may totally NOT be what you're going for here...

I was recently thinking about the same thing for us. I was trying to come up with something unique and meaningful at the same time. My two ideas for mascots were (a) turtles, as in Aesop's fable "slow and steady wins the race" (hey Rebecca, great minds think alike!) and (b) ants (could they be cute??) as in Proverbs 6:6-8.

My idea for a name is "the journey," "journeying" or something like it.

When we started homeschooling, back in the days of yore, we named our homeschool Daily Bread Christian Academy. I liked this because of the obvious affiliation with Christianity but also because of the daily aspect of training and teaching children. Fast forward to the present, if you asked any of my littles what our homeschool is named and they would probably say Ship Full O' Pirates. I guess it's just that a homeschool name isn't mentioned much, if at all.

I was homeschooled K-5 through High School Senior. We were not very creative with our homeschool name -- we were "Godby's Homeschool." However, I know several families who have chosen a Greek word for something significant, for example "Karis Chirstian School" or "Karis Homeschool" where Karis is the Greek word for love. Does your family have a mission statement or family verse? Choose a Greek word or Biblical word that either describes your family, or is your family's "aim." My life verse is Col. 1:10 and sometimes I just write "Walking Worthy." Hope it helps!

How about Cherith Academy and your mascot can be the raven?

Because just as the Raven nurtured Elijah at the brook Cherith, so you nurture and teach your children!
